Meret Oppenheim Bone Necklace with Mouth, designed 1935–36, executed in 2014 18kt burnished gold necklace 21 x 22.5 x 44 cm edition 17 plus 3AP’s signed and numbered Gems and Ladders Edition   Meret Oppenheim designed and commissioned the Bone necklace with mouth in 1935-36. The original brass prototype resides in a private collection and the necklace has been realised from cut gold sheet. This necklace shows Oppenheim’s ability to collage materials and subjects: at the centre of the defensive row of bones is a feminine mouth. Collage was the perfect Surrealism medium and this piece also illustrates one of the artist’s lasting themes: bones were featured in works throughout her career. Take, for example, her self-portrait from 1964 X-RAY of M.O.’s Skull (M.O. 1913-2000); the x-ray image suggests that the viewer might see the artist’s essence. Meret Oppenheim, however, teasingly pre-empted her own death in the work’s title and hid behind her earrings, rings and necklace – the metal objects that would endure for many decades thereafter.

Liliane Lijn Fossil Necklace, 2008 Silver sulphur, silver matt necklace 70cm long Edition of 8 + 2AP     Evocative of her visual abstractions and material manipulations, Lijn’s concept of the primal earth are finely tuned with the geological sciences. As humanity uncovers the remnants of past creatures,  the cycle of life and death are drawn into continuous momentum of renewal and vitality that Lijn echoes in her Fossil series. The way these necklaces engage so fittingly with the wearer evokes a very personal dialogue with Lijn’s motifs of the primal earth. In a very personal, meditative approach with these pieces, Lijn begins her pieces by moulding a clump of very hot wax to create these ornaments upon the necklace piece.  The high temperature, granted this malleable nature of the wax to manipulate the mass and resemble these earthen elements. As technology has allowed her to work with a diverse range of materials in her sculptural work; instead of cast metal, electro-forming was used to carefully reflect the same earthen surface texture reinforced into these beautiful, elegant necklace pieces.

Liliane Lijn Lava Necklace, 2015 Silver sulphur necklace Edition of 8 + 2AP   Evocative of her visual abstractions and material manipulations, Lijn’s concept of the primal earth are finely tuned with the geological sciences. With this necklace piece, they  resemble the same characteristics of the highly volatile liquid magma that keeps the planet alive and constantly rotating. This same magma that reaches the surface from volcanic eruptions, maintains the cycle of life and death, are drawn into continuous momentum of renewal and vitality that Lijn echoes in her work. The way this necklace engages so fittingly with the wearer evokes a very personal dialogue with Lijn’s motifs of the primal earth. Atena Lemnia

Giulio Paolini Atena Lemnia, 2016 18kt white gold bas-relief necklace with white gold torque 5 x 5 cm Edition of 8 Signed and numbered Giulio Paolini’s first wearable art project has been ideated around the idea of love. This gold bas-relief pendant is inspired by former installation of the artist ‘Sulla Soglia’. It represents a woman in Hellenistic style seen from behind, facing directly at the heart of the wearer. She is trying to trespass the threshold between the outer and the inner dimension, emphasizing the universality of the gaze as a bonding action This piece condenses the essence of the artist’s research that has always demonstrated interest in exploring the nature of images and the relationship between image and viewer. Through replication, fragmentation and citation Paolini often incorporates elements from the past into his artworks, thus establishing an artistic dialogue across times and styles.
