Inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche’s idea of ‘fatal beauty’, Abdessemed created a chain bracelet and a pair of earrings made of an accumulation of white gold laser-cut razor blades. Ania Guillaume Hippocampus (3), 2016 Silver gold plated cuff 9 cm long Unique and signed The hippocampus bracelet collection was born in 2015 when the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco reintroduced this fascinating species in the marine reserve. Ania, who lived most of her life in a female dominated environment, was especially fascinated by the fact that this is one of the few animal species where the male carries the pregnancy. The Artist shaped each seahorses by hand with wax leaving her fingerprints on the bracelet. Each cuff is unique and signed. “There is no greater creation than that of Mother Nature, it is the nature’s creation that inspires me profoundly” Ania Guillaume (Polish-Belgian, b.1956) is a Monaco-based sculptor and painter. Her inspiration comes from the natural environments of East and West. The artist traveled incessantly, but Japan and the Mediterranean coast were the places that most influenced her. In sculpture as much as in jewellery, there is a strong perception of the spiritual natural universe as well as the pleasant tactile quality of its textures. Miquel Barceló Les Algues de mer (Seaweed), 2007 Oxidised silver bracelet 7.5 cm (D) 4 cm (H) Edition 6 of 20 Signed and numbered The collection of Miquel Barceló came to life in 2007 through a dialogue between the artist and Chus Burés. These pieces are linked to the artist’s iconography and in tune with his serpentine aesthetic of that time. Before the collaboration started, Barceló finished the altarpiece for the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in Palma Cathedral, Majorca; a magical world that drew life from the sea and plants. Out of it arose Les Algues de Mer (seaweed) and a series of jewels that entitled Boucles de Mer (sea curls) made in 18 kt gold and oxidised silver. Barceló made an enormous pile of test pieces out of variety of easily worked material – aluminium foil, cardboard and pieces of wax he shaped with his hand, leaving fingerprints that are reproduced in some of the jewels.

Or perhaps you just knew that I wouldn’t resist doing something new, exploring most of all my limits, my inclinations, my prejudices and why not admit it, my fetishisms. During the process of making these pieces there was a somehow omnipresent, vague and yet entangling eroticism as if bending, twisting, welding was a caress. There is no difference in doing a jewel, a sculpture or a drawing. At least not for me. Ai Weiwei Rebar in Gold, 2013 24kt gold bracelet 20 cm long Unique Rebar in Gold takes root in Ai Weiwei’s investigation into the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province, China, which killed approximately 70,000 people. Ai’s concern focused on the distressing number of children who perished due to the poor construction techniques used to build government schools. Upon visiting Wenchuan after the earthquake, Ai found a mass of contorted steel rebar, left behind from the fallen school buildings. Ai purchased 200 tonnes of the material from the scrapyards, where they were sent after the sites were cleared, for use in a bold body of work dedicated to the catastrophe. “It is about commemoration and memory” Ai Weiwei says. “Whether your memory or the one I have, that’s up to you, so you mould the piece to suit you. I used gold because it’s precious and that’s what life is. If you wear this piece in the name of memory of a life lost or your life ahead, that’s what matters.
