The Winter Branches — A Story of Nature, Memory, and Art
Long before any metal was melted or diamond was set, there was a path — a path through woods and city streets where Michele Oka Doner’s eyes wandered, drawn not to monuments or architecture, but to the subtle beauty beneath her feet. On those walks, her gaze would follow the branching gestures of twigs scattered on the earth — the tiniest sculptures nature had cast down. Each twig seemed alive with movement: a silent story of growth, resilience, and form. Over time, these humble twigs became an unplanned collection, each one distinct yet belonging to a larger conversation about life and nature’s genius.
At a certain point, something spontaneous and irresistible happened. Doner, whose entire life has been shaped by an intimate relationship with the natural world, felt compelled to translate these fallen forms into objects of adornment. She saw in those simple branches not just shape, but soul — as if each one carried the memory of all the seasons it had witnessed. With that vision, she began to cast the twigs in bronze, preserving their original structure while elevating them to a new material language.
But the story did not end with bronze. Michele Oka Doner introduced old-cut diamonds or champagne diamonds- soft, warm, each with its own subtle glow to illuminate and transform the pieces. To her, the sparkle did not merely decorate; it suggested the ephemeral: morning dew on a branch, frost catching the first light of day, or the quiet, crystalline breath of winter’s dawn. The contrast between bronze and diamond became a poetic metaphor, the dark memory of wood and the fleeting beauty of light.
Thus was born Winter Branches: An Ongoing Conversation, a series of one-of-a-kind brooches in bronze, silver, 18 kt white gold, and old-cut diamonds, only one made with emeralds. Each brooch carries a distinct name and personality, echoing the individuality of the twig that inspired it. These names give life to the pieces, encouraging the wearer to see them not as ornaments, but as companions- each with its own story, character, and presence.
This series began in 2007, and the original Winter Branch brooches became cherished by collectors so much so that the early pieces sold out in a private sale at Christie’s. But for Michele Oka Doner, the dialogue with nature never ends. As she continues to find new branches with forms that speak to her, she builds upon this ongoing conversation – adding, naming, and refining ever mindful that each piece is a bridge between the organic world and human expression.
In these brooches, there is no separation between art and life. They are meditations on nature’s silent poetry, calling us to recognize not just the outward beauty of the world, but our own deep, primal connection to it.
