A brilliant geometric piece, Gigi Mariani works with very old-fashioned techniques. Using niello, a blackener with the aid of sulfur, he conceals the preciousness of areas of the precious metals. Under the application of heat, “blood clots” and cracks appear in the surfaces — making them appear marked by age. The result of Cracks in White becomes a sculptural bracelet that is beautifully contrasted with the clean surface of the silver and the blackened niello. Mariani exemplifies his instinctive approach of using the metal surface as a canvas, contrasting such an expressive surface with precise, geometric forms. In addition to precious metals, the basic materials of Gigi Mariani’s jewellery include iron, copper and brass. As both a goldsmith and a visual artist, Mariani demonstrates such high attention to materiality, these unique, aesthetic creations bring such an intrigue to them that makes them so avidly collected.
